YMCA ROBERTS RANCH
Kerr County, Texas
San Antonio & Hill Country YMCA, 2002 1110-acre
property for outdoor education and recreation for older youth groups
- Owing to both the richness of its biodiversity and its ranching
heritage, the plan focused first on comprehensive environmental
analysis, and second on preservation.
- Numerous partnerships were established to facilitate both the
planning as well as the ongoing development and interpretive components.
- Viewsheds, buffers, joint-management strategies with adjacent
properties, landscape restoration, historic preservation, backcountry
camping, cultural resource interpretation, and tenets of sustainable
planning and design were all part of the master plan.
- Specific areas of limited and moderate degrees of development
were identified.
- A site-wide trail network, with interpretive components provides
for a variety of user experiences within several unique environmental
niches.
- Restricted use zones were included based on their overall sensitivity.
This multi-phase master plan includes a detailed development and
conservation program of specific site improvements, infrastructure
costs, architectural elements, interpretive components, landscape
restoration and recreational facilities.
The habitat of unique and endemic species has been permanently
preserved by protection of entire subwatersheds within the project.
