YMCA CAMP FLAMING ARROW
Kerr County, Texas
San Antonio & Hill Country YMCA, 2002
214-acre, youth camp facility for 75 years
Our efforts with this planning initiative dealt with the historical
and environmental fabric of a 75-year-old much-loved facility. In
our collaboration with the administration, staff and the Board of
Directors, it was decided to dramatically shift the functional areas
of camp and to restore large areas of the landscape.
In evaluating the "hinterland", we discovered a diverse
array of environmental resources, and therefore opportunities availed
themselves. De-centralized backcountry camp and recreational programming
areas were provided, all linked by a loop trail. A relocated equestrian
facility will provide much needed shelter for horse and rider alike.
Segregated and multi-use trails will offer more opportunity, in
a safer manner. And, more sensitive areas will allow for an increased
interpretive program. Throughout, a combination of blending resource
interpretation with equal amounts of natural and cultural perspectives
will help in restoring the finer aspects of the old camp experience,
with new and expanded environmental education programs.
The plan calls for a balance of restoration, strategic demolition,
and new construction, all timed not to disrupt the cycles of Camp.
This combination of landscape, infrastructure improvements, architectural
components, educational and recreational facilities is part of a
$4.76 million dollar master plan implemented by
the YMCA.
