Dixie's extensive and diverse education and professional experience span
30 years during which time he has produced and collaborated in
various award-winning projects. In 1988 he established Dixie Watkins III
& Associates, a multidisciplinary firm providing comprehensive, conservation-based,
master planning and land planning services. Dixie specializes in projects
that involve open space, parks, historic landscapes, recreational facility
and corridor planning, land use, rural and community planning, zoning
studies, innovative engineering solutions, development strategies, and
coordination with governmental entities. Other services he provides include
architectural and landscape planning and design for residential communities,
commercial properties, and municipalities. He is well-known for incorporating
natural and historic elements, and indigenous themes and materials into
project planning and design. He also provides unique insight into environmental
management involving systematic research, evaluation and analysis techniques
for the conservation, enhancement, and interpretation of both natural
and cultural resources.
In 1996, Dixie was Team Leader for the East Side Salado Creek Corridor component of the Environmental Design Charrette -- Living with Water -- sponsored by the American Institute of Architects, San Antonio. His team was a multi-disciplinary team that worked to develop a strategic plan for the East section of Salado Creek, balancing conservation of natural resources with the need for re-development strategies. A video of the presentation of this plan is available at: Salsa.net (see "designteamEAST" link).
